The SMARTECH Group of the Industrial Systems Institue (ISI) is searching for four interested candidates in fully funded Doctoral Candidates positions by the European Comission Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programs EMPOWER-6G and EXCAT-6G under the supervision of Prof. Christos Verikoukis.

EXACT-6G (https://www.exact6g.eu) :

1.     Title:Inter Distributed Intelligent Management Orchestrator (DIMO) intent and policy propagation and monitoring

The objectives of this PhD position are: to design Service Level Agreement itent translation and intent propagation over DIMO solutions for 6G wireless networks. The expected results include, Intelligent mechanisms to translate SLA to intents, define a unified intent models to propagate over DIMO and service recomposition using intent and SLA monitoring.

2.     Title: DRL driven Decision Engines for self-healing and self-managed microservices

The objectives of this PhD position are to generate decisions that take the 6G system to the desired state fulfilling business intents in real time and to offer  auto-redundancy, load-balancing and self-healing capabilities for the extended edge infrastructure. The expected results include, to deliver a set of Decision Engines (DEs), one per compute continuum domain, that implement control loops towards decentralized zero-touch service management, to implement Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning algorithms within the DE control loop and to deliver coordinated operations between the DIMOs and the respective DEs to offer intent-to-policy translation and unification.

 

EMPOWER-6G (https://www.empower6g.eu)

1.     Title: Regional network design for Cell-Free (CF) and hybrid mMIMO fronthauling

The objectives of this position is  to deploy the Operations-Central Unit-Control Plane (O-CU-CP) and, Operations-Central Unit-Control Plane (O-CU-UP), and Open RAN Distributed Unit nodes in the converged CF-based optical-wireless configuration and to determine algorithms for the optimal location of Radio Units (RU) and mMIMO antenna based on the optical components’ locations.

The expected results include a new Open-RAN compatible converged optical-wireless network for CF support; and innovative RU-placement algorithms that jointly consider the locations of radio and optical components, while incorporating RU clustering algorithms.

 

2.     Design of a multi-tier MEC federation paradigm

The objectives fo this position is to overcome the limitations of centralized ML-driven control approaches when applied to the multi-tier EMPOWER-6G configuration and to provide support to the elastic disaggregation, replication and migration of Cloud-Native MEC applications.

The expected results include the design and evaluation of novel Distributed Deep RL based architecture, that considers RL agents at each tier, and to design a decision engine that makes centralised decisions targeting to address stability and convergence problems.

 

To be considered, the candidate must hold a Master degree in telecommunications, electrical, computer engineering or related disciplines, and 

We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic junior scientists, with excellent research skills and analytical abilities, fluency in English (spoken and written), proactive communication skills and problem solving as part of a team, solid programming skills. Strong record keeping, great work ethic and initiatives are essential characteristics. Previous experience in fields related to the specific positions is a plus.

Candidates of any nationality are welcome, but should not have resided or carried out their main activity in Greece for more than 1 year in the past 3 years.
